Gadgets with Flash on Windows Vista x64
Users of Windows Vista 64 Bits might have noticed that our gadget is not working properly on their system. More specifically, the audio player is not working. Why is it not working? The answer is simple, Adobe says:
Adobe Flash Player is not supported for playback in a 64-bit browser. However, you can run Flash Player in a 32-bit browser running on a 64-bit operating system.
Here, the browser is the sidebar and if you didn’t change anything it is running in 64 bits mode. So what you have to do is simply to run your sidebar in 32 bits mode – and it will work perfectly… Yes normally you should not have to do this yourself and maybe Adobe (Microsoft?) developers should have thought of something to run the player in 32 bit even if the browser is in 64 bit..?
Anyway, I prepared a simple guide with screenshots to assist you in the procedure, just follow the steps and the gadget will be running within minutes…
1. Prevent the 64 bit sidebar from running at the start-up
By default this is the 64 bit version of the sidebar which will start when you open your session, we need to prevent it from starting so we can start the 32 bit version instead.

To do this right-click on the sidebar icon on your taskbar (picture 1a, 1b) and select Properties.
1c. Windows sidebar options
A configuration window will appear (picture 1c), just uncheck Start Sidebar when Windows Start. Then click on Apply and Ok to close the window.
2. Close the 64 bit sidebar
Now before starting the 32 bit version of the sidebar you have to close the 64 bit. To do this right-click again on the sidebar icon and select Close.
3. Run the 32 bit sidebar
The 32 bit version of the sidebar is located in Program Files (x86) in the folder Windows Sidebar, once you located it just run the program sidebar.exe.
Alternatively you can try entering the following command in the Run… box (replacing C by the letter of your hard drive if it is different).
C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe
4. Make the 32 bit sidebar start automatically
To have the 32 bit version of the sidebar starting automatically when you open your session, you have to do the opposite of the step 1. Right-click on the sidebar icon, select Properties, and make sure that the option Start Sidebar when Windows starts is checked. Then click on Apply and OK to close the window.
That’s it! Now next time you will start Windows the sidebar will automatically start in 32 bit mode - and our gadget (and other gadgets containing flash) will work properly. For those that know their way around the Windows Registry:
Click Start - type regedit.exe
Browse to \\HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Run\SideBar
Change the key to this: C:\Program Files (x86)\Windows Sidebar\sidebar.exe /autoRun
Then Close & Reopen Session or Restart
Vista will load the 32bit Sidebar this time and the gadgets that use flash should work. When Adobe release the 64bit version you can undo this by following the same steps but removing the ” (x86)” from the path in the Sidebar key, thus loading the 64bit version after starting up.

Update: Adobe prereleased a 64bit version of the Flash plugin for Linux 64bit platforms on 07/30/2009. It’s an alpha version but It seems they’re finally working on 64bit support. Let’s hope this means they’re also working on the 64 bit flash plugin for the Windows OS. Who knows maybe this will be a non-issue by Windows 7 official release.
